Project TEACH: The Eating, Affect, and Cognitive Health Study

Research study for adolescents examining working memory and eating behavior in the natural environment

Study Type
Assessment/Observational
Study Purpose
This study is designed to see how working memory, mood, and eating behavior fluctuate in day-to-day life.
Study Design

Participants are asked to complete two study visits at our center. In the first visit, children and parents will be asked to complete questionnaires and provide height/weight measurements. Children will be asked to complete an interview about their eating and play a few cognitive games. After the first visit, children will be enrolled in an online survey system, in which they will receive 4 – 6 texts a day containing survey links for a 2-week period. The text surveys will take approximately 2-minutes to complete, and will assess working memory, current mood, and eating behaviors since the last survey. After completing the 2-weeks of survey texts, participants will be asked to return for a brief follow-up visit to provide feedback and receive compensation for text surveys completed.

Study Requirements
Participants must be 10 – 18 years old, overweight, and not currently undergoing weight loss treatment. Participants cannot be on medication that affects weight or appetite. Participants do not need a cell phone to complete the study; study-loaned phones can be provided.
Study Duration
2.5 weeks
Study Benefits
Participants will receive compensation for each of the two study visits, as well as compensation for each text survey completed.
