Promoting Healthy Weight Gain During Pregnancy

Study Purpose
Healthy Beginnings is an exciting new program comparing two different approaches to help moms gain a healthy amount of weight during pregnancy.
Study Design
Women will be assigned by chance to one of two groups: The Health Promotion Group or The Lifestyle Treatment Group. The Health Promotion Group involves one meeting with a counselor and materials sent in the mail about healthy habits during pregnancy. The Lifestyle Treatment Group includes brief meetings throughout the pregnancy to discuss healthy weight gain and healthy eating and activity during pregnancy; this group will receive a meal plan and a free supply of meal replacement drinks to help them achieve a healthy diet and appropriate weight gain.
Study Requirements
To be initially eligible for this study, you must be a woman who is 18-40 years old, overweight, less than 14 weeks pregnant, having one baby and delivering at Women and Infants Hospital. For more information on eligibility requirements, call us at 401-793-8950
Study Duration
Less than 14 weeks gestation - 1-year post-partum
Study Benefits
Everyone who participates in Healthy Beginnings will receive education on healthy weight gain, eating and exercise during pregnancy. Participants may benefit by being able to gain the recommended and healthy amount of weight and prevent gaining too much weight during pregnancy. Women may also be able to prevent keeping on extra weight after delivery and increase the health benefits to both moms and babies.
