Study Purpose |
GDP is an exciting new program studying whether weight loss before pregnancy can help prevent gestational diabetes. |

Women will be assigned by chance to one of two groups: The Lifestyle Treatment Group or The Health Promotion Group. |

The Lifestyle Treatment Group promotes healthy weight loss, eating, and exercise. This includes ongoing meetings (in person or by phone) with a counselor to discuss healthy ways to lose weight, increase your physical activity, and improve your diet before your next pregnancy. The Health Promotion Group includes two meetings with a counselor (in person or by phone) to discuss prenatal health. Both groups receive materials by mail about healthy habits in preparation for pregnancy. |
Study Requirements |
To be initially eligible for this study, you must be a woman who is age 18 or older, had Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) in a previous pregnancy, and are planning to become pregnant again within the next 2 years. For more information on eligibility requirements, call us at 401-793-8950 |

Study Benefits |
Everyone who participates in the program will receive education on healthy weight loss, eating, and exercise in preparation for a healthy pregnancy. Also, you will receive follow-up meetings (in person or by phone) before, during, and after pregnancy to assess changes in your weight, eating, activity, and health. Participants will receive payment for completing assessment visits. |
