Study Type |
Habitual exercise training study focusing on motivation |
Study Purpose |
To test a 1-day, workshop intervention designed to help you implement an exercise program and persist in exercising over time. |
Study Design |
If you take part in this study, ALL participants will receive the same 1-day, 4-hour physical activity intervention in groups. Each group will have approximately 6-10 individuals. You will be taught how to initiate and maintain an exercise routine and deal with common barriers to sustaining high levels of activity. Prior to the workshop, you will be asked to complete a baseline assessment at the Weight Control and Diabetes Research Center (WCDRC) where you will complete questionnaires about your physical activity, motivation for engaging in exercise, how you deal with negative thoughts and feelings, as well as a demographic questionnaire. You will also be given a wearable exercise tracking device that you will be asked to wear for 7 days. This appointment will take about 45 minutes. You will be asked to return to the WCDRC to repeat each of these measures (including the wearable exercise-tracker) at 3 and 6 months. You will receive $25 for completing each assessment. |
Study Requirements |
To be eligible, individuals must be between 21-65 years of age, be overweight or obese, and be insufficiently active (i.e. < 150 minutes/week of planned exercise). |
Study Duration |
6 months total, although the workshop is a single day and you will receive support for 12 weeks total. |
Study Benefits |
You will receive a cutting edge workshop designed to help you exercise more, a device for tracking your exercise, and financial compensation for your time. |
