Study Type
Smartphone-based treatment study to decrease sedentary time in overweight adults.
Study Purpose
To test whether a smartphone application that monitors sedentary behavior and provides automated feedback and encouragement can be used to decrease time spent sitting and lying down during waking hours.
Study Design
Participants will be asked to attend 5 visits (each lasting 20-60 minutes) at the Weight Control and Diabetes Research Center over a 4-week period. After completing a 7-day baseline assessment of sedentary behavior, participants will be asked to complete 3 different goal conditions to decrease sedentary time. To help participants achieve the different goals, a smartphone and accompanying “app” will be provided that delivers real-time prompts and feedback to be active after extended periods of sitting and lying down during waking hours. Participants will be asked to follow each of the goal conditions for 7 days.
Study Requirements
To be initially eligible for the study, you must be between 21 and 65 years old and obese. For more information on eligibility requirements, please call Tiffany Leblond at 401-793-9713.
Study Duration
4 weeks.
Study Benefits
All participants in this study will receive information about the relationship between sedentary behavior and health. Participation in this program may help you to reduce sedentary behaviors, increase physical activity, and experience related health benefits; however, there is no guarantee that this program will help you reduce sedentary behavior. Additionally, all participants will be financially compensated for their time.
