20-week weight loss program which compares two approaches for improving long-term weight loss maintenance

Study Type
Weight loss study
Study Purpose
To compare two approaches for improving long-term weight loss maintenance
Study Design

If eligible, you will receive a 20-week weight loss program. The first 12 weeks will consist of weekly, in-person, group-based meetings, which will focus on behavioral approaches for improving diet and physical activity. Individuals will then be randomized to receive an 8-week mindfulness self-compassion program or an 8-week nutrition and cooking education program. Classes will be held on Tuesday nights from May through September. This 20-week program is provided at no cost to you. You will be asked to complete assessments at 3, 5, and 7.5 months in which we will measure your weight and physical activity and ask you to complete surveys via your computer.

Study Requirements
To be eligible, individuals must be female, weight loss seeking (BMI: 40-55 kg/m2), and between the ages of 18-65.
Study Duration
8 Months
Study Benefits
You will receive a 12-week in-person weight loss program which has been shown to help people lose weight. In addition, you will receive 8 weeks of a self-compassion program or 8 weeks of a nutrition and cooking education program. These programs will provide you with skills for keeping the weight loss off long-term.
